As I mentioned in my self-introduction
posting, the animated film “Toy Story(1995)” is one of my favorite movies. I
liked the story and characters. But Toy Story has more interesting stories
regarding its making. And after knowing that stories, you will definitely think
that Toy Story is literally the innovation in the animated film history. There
are many innovative aspects from this movie regarding CG, the Academy Awards,
and profits.
The Toy Story is the first feature-length
100% computer-graphic (CG) animated film. There had been many CG animations
before the Toy Story released. But there were just only short-animations or
something. Because at that time, not many people thought the big possibility of
the fully CG animation films, so there were not many investments to CG animated
film industry for animators to make big CG movies. But Steve Jobs thought that possibility,
so he founded the company called the Pixar Animation Studio. And he recruited
animators and CG experts such as John Lasseter and Ed Catmull who were trying
to make CG animated films hard and encouraged them while investing lots of
money for them to make great featured-length CG animated film. That’s how it
was, the beginning of the Toy Story.
The Toy Story is the first to have an
existence as an animated film in the Academy Awards. The Toy Story
got a lot of awards in the Academy Awards. For example, the director John Lasseter received an Academy Special Achievement Award in 1996 for the development and inspired application of
techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated
film." Particularly, the most noticeable
point is that Toy Story is the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy
Awards writing category called Best Original Screenplay . After that, lots of
animated films have been getting awards in the Academy Awards.
The Toy Story is the first taking a big role
with huge profits for animated film industry. Upon its release on November 22, 1995, Toy Story managed to gross more than
$350 million worldwide. In details, Toy Story earned $361,958,736 worldwide and became the
highest-grossing film of 1995. At the time of its release, it was the third
highest-grossing animated film of all time, after The Lion King (1994)
and Aladdin (1992). This made people assure that
computer-animated films could be successful, so many studios began to make CG
animated films.
There
are very innovative moments for the Toy Story to have as the first
featured-length 100% CG animated film, the first existence in the Academy Awards
and the first to get huge profits as the first featured-length 100% CG animated
film. I think the journey of Toy Story is really innovative. Because lots of
people didn’t really think that CG animated films can be successful and
popular. That’s why Steve Jobs, John Lasseter and Ed Catmull had a tough time
at the beginning when making the Toy Story. But through that tough time, Toy
Story finally was completed, came out to the world, and became one of the
historical films. Who would have known that people could watch the 100% CG feature-length
animated film?
